How to Apply for Canada Immigration from India

Canada selects skilled immigrants as permanent residents’ dependant on their capacity to settle in Canada and contribute to the economy. The Canadian system to manage immigration of skilled workers to the country is called the Express Entry system. It is the most popular mode of immigration to Canada for Indians.

Express Entry is used by Canadian govt. to manage applications for permanent resident Canadian visa for the following programs:

  • Federal Skilled Worker Program
  • Federal Skilled Trades Program
  • Canadian Express Class

Territories and Provinces can also recruit candidates in the Express Entry pool via the Provincial Nominee Program to meet needs of local markets.

For applying to Express Entry, there are two steps:

Step 1: Create profile for Express Entry.

The form contains details like:

  • Education
  • Skills
  • Work experience
  • Language ability and other details

Creating your profile in Express Entry is online, secure and free. Once you begin your Express Entry profile, you have 60 days to complete it. The profile will determine your candidature for Express Entry. If found eligible, you will be accepted to Pool of Candidates.

If you gain entry to the Express Entry Pool, you can begin searching for jobs by making a job match account with the job bank. After entering Canada, you can resume searching for jobs using job bank. You can also promote your job search using job boards and recruiters.

Simply getting into the Pool does not imply that Canadian govt. will invite you to apply for PR. For being chosen, you need to have the highest scores when they sent out Invitations to Apply. If you get this invitation, you can apply for PR.

When you apply for permanent residence card Canada, you will need to fulfil capability and eligibility stipulations under immigration law of Canada.

Step 2: The highest-ranking candidates are invited to the pool to apply for permanent residence.

You will be ranked in the pool for Express entry using a points-based system called the Comprehensive Ranking System. The CRS grants you points’ on the basis of:

  • Education
  • Skills
  • Work experience
  • Language ability
  • Other factors.

More points can be garnered by:

  • Canadian diplomas, certificates and degrees
  • A real job offer
  • Nomination from territory or province.

Invitations to apply will be sent to candidates with highest score. After you get an Invitation to Apply, you will have 90 days to submit an online application for PR. The govt. will process applications with supporting documents within 6 months.

You can remain in pool for up to 12 months as long as you meet the criteria forone of the federal programs. As your case changes, you can keep on updating your profile.

If you don’t get an Invitation to Apply for PR within 12 months of submission of profile of Express Entry, you can join again with anew profile. Provided you still meet required criteria, you will re-join the pool.

Recent changes in the Express Entry system are:

  • Gain additional points if a sibling is a Canadian citizen or has PR.
  • Gain points for skills in French
  • Creating account with job bank is optional
